FAQ – How much can a landlord increase rent?

There is no legislative limit under the Residential Tenancies Act on how much a landlord can increase rent in Alberta. However, there are legislative limits on how often a landlord can increase rent.

Keep in mind that there is now developing caselaw in Alberta that says that landlords cannot raise rent to indirectly evict a tenant (also known as an “economic eviction”). The courts and RTDRS may void a rent increase notice in such situations. For more information, refer to CPLEA’s webpage or publication on economic evictions.
