Roommates / Joint Tenants

If you are thinking about renting a place to live with some friends it is important to understand the following:
  • Who is a tenant?
  • What does it means if you all sign the lease?
  • What if one roommate signs the lease?
The Residential Tenancies Act sets our minimum notice periods and other tenant rights. In order to have the protection of those rights under the Act, you have to be classified as a tenant.

You may want to have a written agreement with your roommates that sets out house rules and responsibilities. You can take a look at a sample agreement here

You can also get information through our shared accommodation FAQs.
