RightsThe law that protects your rights as a tenant in Alberta is the Residential Tenancies Act. The Act provides rules and remedies for both landlords and tenants. The Residential Tenancies Act covers many aspects of a rental agreement. You and a landlord can add other items to the rental agreement that are not covered by the Act. There is also a "Voluntary Code of Practice" published by the Alberta government which is an aid to interpreting the Act. Other laws may also affect the rights of a tenant with regard to certain matters.
Although most agreements to rent a place to live are covered by the Residential Tenancies Act, the Act specifically excludes some arrangements (laws that apply to renting particular types of property.)
