Laws that Apply to Renting Particular Types of Properties
- Rent a self-contained house: Covered by the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA)
- Rent a self-contained apartment: Covered by the RTA
- Rent a self-contained basement suite: Covered by the RTA
- Rent a place where the landlord actually shares the living space: Not covered by RTA as sharing living quarters with landlord. Agreement between the parties will determine their rights and obligations.
- Rent a self-contained condominium: Covered by RTA and Condominium Property Act
- Rent subsidized public housing property: Covered by RTA and subsidized public housing legislation
- Rent a mobile home site: Covered by Mobile Homes Sites Tenancies Act. Not covered by RTA.
- Rent a hotel room for under six months: Covered by Innkeepers Act. Not covered by RTA.
- Rent an apartment or house attached to a business, where one agreement deals with renting the business and the living accommodation: Not covered by RTA. The rental agreement will set out the rights and obligations of the parties.
- Rent space in a student dorm: Not covered by RTA. The rental agreement will set out the rights and obligations of the parties.
- Rent space in a nursing home which provides basic care and care under an approved program: Not covered by RTA, covered by the Nursing Homes Act.
- Rent space in a lodge for senior citizens, where the lodge is operated either by a management body authorized by the Alberta Housing Act, or under an agreement with the Minister: Not covered by RTA. Covered by Alberta Housing Act.
- Rent space in a social care facility: Covered by Social Care Facilities Licensing Act, if licensed under that Act.
